Successive governments have failed to prioritise nursing and midwifery pay, and our fatigued workforce is responding with its feet.

Nurses and midwives have long been crying out for better pay and conditions. It’s time the NSW government backed up its words and recognised the worth of nurses and midwives by coming to the table with a competitive pay offer. This is essential to retain nurses and midwives here in NSW, and entice nurses and midwives to move to our state for well-paid jobs.

In the next state budget, the NSW government must properly remunerate the workforce that our public health system relies on to provide care for all patients.

Nurses and midwives deserve more in 2024.

Dear Treasurer,

I write to you as a health professional with serious concerns about the state of public health in NSW. I have watched as many of my colleagues leave for more competitive wages across the border or exit our professions altogether. This is concerning, and more must be done to save our health system.

For more than a decade, we’ve felt the impact of neglect under conservative governments. Our public health system has struggled from under-resourcing and lagging pay rates. This was compounded by the pandemic and we’re still dealing with its impacts. Patients have felt the strain, while nurses and midwives fight on valiantly every single day – but we can’t go on like this.

You can chart a brighter future for all of us. You can make long-lasting commitments to public health. This includes delivering a competitive pay increase for nurses and midwives. The benefits to our state are many: increased productivity, better patient outcomes, and stronger retention to help us meet the ever-changing demands of an ageing population.

Treasurer, every dollar you invest in public health is an investment in the future of our state. Without a well-funded public health system, there is no bright future for the more than eight million people who call NSW home.

I welcome your government’s commitment to introduce ratios in the public health care system. Key to delivering the workplace reforms you have embarked on is the allocation of additional funding. This is essential to see ratios implemented in every ward and unit, in every hospital, across the five identified clinical areas.  It is also important that AiN/AiM roles are supernumerary in this reform process.

In the next state budget, I’m urging you to value nurses and midwives by investing in public health. Please deliver certainty that patients will receive the care they deserve, and that our workforce will receive the pay and conditions we have more than earned.
