I’m a nurse living in your electorate and I need your help. Since the beginning of the pandemic, I’ve turned up to work to care for patients knowing that on any given shift I risk contracting COVID-19 and could infect my friends and family.

In May last year, NSW parliament amended the Workers’ Compensation legislation which meant if I was unfortunate enough to become infected with COVID-19, I would not have to prove transmission occurred at work in order to be compensated. With all the dangers my colleagues and I have faced over the last 22 months, it was a welcome support knowing the government had our backs for putting our personal health on the line.

Imagine my disappointment when I heard that the NSW government is planning to reverse these changes to workers’ compensation. I felt so let down. Healthcare workers infected with COVID-19 should not have to wear the financial burden on top of the illness.

Nurses, midwives, doctors and all healthcare staff have sacrificed so much for our community and they deserve better.

I’m urging you, when the NSW government attempts to repeal this amendment, please think of the nurses and midwives at your hospital and block it. NSW may be opening up, but we’re still on the frontline everyday and need all the support we can get.
